Ingredients

  • 450 g 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for best flavor)
  • 2 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger minced
  • 2 green onions chopped (plus extra for garnish)
  • Salt to taste
  • Black pepper to taste
  • 480 ml 2 cups cooked rice (jasmine, basmati, or brown)
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds optional
  • Sliced cucumber optional
  • Kimchi or pickled vegetables optional

Method

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot and shimmering.
  2. Add the ground beef in an even layer and break it apart with a spatula.
  3. Cook the beef, stirring occasionally, until it’s evenly browned and no longer pink.
  4. Drain any excess fat to keep the dish from becoming greasy.
  5. Reduce heat to medium, then stir in the minced garlic and ginger until fragrant and aromatic.
  6. Pour in the soy sauce and sesame oil, stirring to coat the beef thoroughly.
  7. Sprinkle in salt and black pepper, adjusting to your preferred seasoning level.
  8. Toss in the chopped green onions and allow the mixture to simmer briefly so flavors meld.
  9. Fluff the cooked rice with a fork and divide it among serving bowls.
  10. Spoon the seasoned beef over each bed of rice, letting the sauce mingle with the grains.
  11. Top with toasted sesame seeds, additional green onions, and optional veggies as desired.
